I made a macro to speed things up. This is script I wrote:

M204 P10000 T10000 ; set acceleration
M593 P"EI3" S.025 F38 ; input shaping test 3/7/2022 change this as needed
G1 X-100 G4 S2 M956 P0 S1000 A0 G4 P10 G1 X100 F20000 ;movement code along X axis, collect data from accelerometer

One thing to remember as you're playing with accelerations, I think you need to update the M201 code in your config file to allow for an acceleration this high.

@phaedrux just tested, it seems so. I turned it to 250c overshot by 2c, waited a minute turned the fan on dropped a couple and it looks pretty stable now:

I wish it was easier too. You may glean more from the driver data sheets from Trinamic. It's going to be trial and errors. And it's debatable whether it would make much of a difference anyway.

@bberger i think I found the issue. Part mechanical, part software. One of the upgrades I did was move the extruder really close to the hotend -- so the bowden tube is now maybe 25 mm tall, so my previous .02 pressure advance was basically messing up and not extruding where it should be. I tried .01 -- seems better, at least it's not - not extruding, where it should be. The other bit was my extruder sherpa mini which I rebuilt, started had a problem in the MJF glass nylon parts -- replaced with printed ABS body, and like night and day, not perfect, not yet -- I think the stepper got a bit damaged in the process, so needs to be swapped to, and I'll swap all the internal bmg gears to be safe, i think the nylon gear got a bit worn out, but looks like it there was an issue of binding maybe in repeated retractions, and the gears would slip, so the big nylon gear needs to go -- seems the mjf body is not stiff enough or some other property. Pretty sure after I replace all the extruder parts, it will be printing perfectly.

Use G30, not G30 S-1.

G30 is a single probe to find Z0.

G30 S-1 is to determine the trigger height of the probe when z0 is set manually.

To control the speed of the probe move you need to adjust your M558 command in config.g which defines the probe behaviour. The F value is the dive speed.

@dc 42 - Thanks. I was going to write a long query here asking for more details. Then I thought I'd first try fighting the windmill (reading the source code). And along the way I found a file called "Movement in RepRapFirmware" in the documentation folder of the source code and it described it all very well in a way I can undersatand, so I can proceed with my excel simulation with some confidence that I'm running close to the actual code (I won't be trying to simulate PA, Input Shaping, or anything other than a single straight line in a Cartesian system).

So, another case of RTFM saving valuable time.

The macro folder is intended for those bits of code that you want appear in the macro section of the DWC where you can invoke them using the mouse.

The sys folder is for most everything else.

I can't see anything in the gcode that would indicate a problem.

All I notice is that you use Z hop. Is there perhaps some backlash or inaccuracy in your Z movement? Have you tried without Z hop?

The other thing is that it's simply a matter of flow rate being a bit off? It looks good for the first layer, but maybe only because it's actually too close? And then the next layer is actually under extruded?

You could also try a different slicer, just to remove that as a variable. It's not a bad idea to have two setup anyway.

@t3p3tony when i try to run the config only what it lets me run it if i put none for the type. even when i do that it will make the move then sit there recording, and then i have to delete the config to get it to stop. any ideas? when put any other type it just says "type" unsupported.
