Deut 3D 6HC questions and Stepper motor match

Can the Duet3D 6HC successfully run these motors as shown below?
Yes the Duet 3 would be able to handle those motors. Even 6 of them, though you'd probably need to cool the board with a fan.
@Jim46 said in Deut 3D 6HC questions and Stepper motor match:
Does it have WIFI?
The Duet 3 itself does not have wifi. Just an ethernet port. You'd need to use the raspberry pi mini computer to have wifi connectivity.
@Jim46 said in Deut 3D 6HC questions and Stepper motor match:
Does it have a something like a touch screen?
With the Duet 3 you have the option of either using a PanelDue touch screen or if you are also using the raspberry pi you can use a touch screen with that which would give you the full web control interface same as you would get on your computer.
@Jim46 said in Deut 3D 6HC questions and Stepper motor match:
Your documentation seems to say that you need to use the Raspberry Pi to make a complete system, which Pi model specifically?
It's not required, but the Pi opens a few possibilities like plugins, wifi connectivity, full sized touch screen with the full web interface, etc. That said, you can use it without the Pi just as well with a PanelDue.
At this point a Pi 4 would be the best choice.
@Jim46 said in Deut 3D 6HC questions and Stepper motor match:
The photo above shows a device above the main board attached via a broad white connector ribbon? Do I need this to make the system work or to be complete? Do you sell that small board and the ribbon and other connectors needed?
That would be the raspberry pi. You'd have to provide your own hardware. Duet provides an SD card image to run with it.

In other words, I'm not a computer expert
Perhaps you can explain in more detail what you're trying to build and accomplish and we can give some more feedback about what the best plan of attack would be.
The Raspberry pi option is definitely more technical in nature than the standalone Duet 3 + paneldue by itself. You could always start with the standalone board and then add the raspberry pi afterwards. It's not an expensive addon.

Hi Danal,
thanks for the comments. From what you say, I should be able to use the DUET3D and the steppers together. What cooling do you recommend. Also, I like the screen reference. I had not seen that model before!
Cheers, Jim -

Ideally, mount the board vertically and have a fan blowing across the board surface both front and back.

Hi Phaedrux,
Thanks so much for your comment. Very helpful!
Presently, I'm building a 4'x4'x4' XYZ printer with 2 steppers on the vertical (Z) axis, 2 steppers on the back and forth X axis and 1 stepper on the Y axis for head positioning left and right. If possible, I may want to add brakes to the Z Axis to hold the print head level as it could be heavy as the design progresses.
Cheers,
Jim -

That's a big one! Do keep us posted.

With no more description than that... we (ok, I) will still have opinions!
Have you thought about 3 motors on the bed, to enable auto-level?
-
Hi Danal,
The printer is currently is aimed at large ceramic items. So, I won't have a bed in the traditional sense.
If none of it works, then it may become a CNC machine.

Hi Guys,
What are your recommendations of the type and wiring for cooling fans for the Duet 3D and the Pi 4?
Who are the best people to buy and support the Duet3D 6HC ?
Thanks again,

JimAssuming the machine is in a "normal office environment" (70 to 80F or 20 to 27C) and not a factory floor:
Cooling: Mount the board vertically, aim your choice of small fan at the BACK of the board. Almost anything will work, total flow is not at all critical. Duets have "constant on" connectors, so you can pick a more expensive and quieter Noctua, or a generic and replace it when it eats bearings or whatever. Almost any airflow.
The Pi should not need an active fan.
Buy and support:
Direct if that is an option.
Filastruder in the USASupport here. Lots of good stuff from the staff and community both. (I'm community, by the way)

Hi Danal,
Thanks so much. It looks like only the main UK outlet has the Duet3D 6HC. Do you happen to know or have contact that can tell me if the board is the 1.0 Version?
I placed an order today for the Pi4 and the screen you suggested.
Next is the Duet3D...
The help here has been superior!

E3D sells the Duet 3 MB6HC too.

Hello Gentleman,
Thanks again for sharing and for your great comments. The 7" screen arrived yesterday as did the CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4. Interesting it includes a small fan about 1" square for the Pi4. Yet, having trouble finding a screen case for the Jun-Electon 7" HD HDMI screen? Does anyone know if it fits the RPi4 7" screen case?
Cheers
Jim -
For UK folk I've this screen on my ebay watch list which looks similar, but not identical.

Getting a little twitchy about the recommended PSU for the Raspberry Pi 4B being 3A, the screen being 2A, and the max external draw from the Duet3 being 3A, so I've also got a USB current meter on order. Suspect there is head room in both screen and Raspberry Pi advised PSU ratings, but I won't really know what the Pi can draw until I get it slicing and working hard! The draw on the screen shouldn't be much higher than playing some YouTube videos though...

@DocTrucker You can always power the RPi from a separate supply if you get desperate.
-
@deckingman I am considering that. Alas it will likely mean a UK socket mounted in the electrickery box, don't fancy trying to wire a USB C plug!
-
@DocTrucker
Modify the wiring going from duet 3 to the pi. Apply the power to the header rather than using the USB-C -
@jay_s_uk fair shout!

@DocTrucker For info, I haven't used the ribbon cable from the Duet to the RPi. Just connected the data pins and a couple of gnds. Then used an external 5V psu to power the RPi etc. Having said - I've now disconnected it and the RPi just sits there unconnected waiting for someone to come up with something useful for it to do.
