Duet 3 mini 5+ Wifi Suspected SD Card Issue
-
Hi I'm having trouble getting my Duet working. I have gone through the getting started page and got the duet connected to my network but when I went to the IP address I got the error saying the web page wasn't on the SD card. Then I pulled the SD card and confirmed all the proper files where on it when I plugged it into my computer. I then reinstalled the SD card and sent the M21 command which responded with the SD card detected but unusable error. I ran M122 and got a transfer speed of 0.2mb/s. I tried another SD card that was blank and got the same error. Next I reformatted the card and rebuilt the file structure using the firmware builder webpage and this time everything worked and I got to the web control where I was able to run PID auto tune for both the heater and the hot end and made the changes permanent in the config file. Then I powered down the printer to connect the steppers because up until this point they were unplugged after getting them plugged in and the board powered back on the web control page showed the same error as the first time I tried accessing it. I sent the board M21 and M122 and got the same unusable and 0.2Mb/s transfer rates.
Should I try reformatting the SD card again? I have replicated the issue with another SD card that's empty.
I'm not sure what else to try, the solder joints look fine on the SD card reader, but I'm not that familiar with SMD soldering.
I did buy this board in March of 2021 but unfortunately other projects and school got in the way so I powered up the board for the first time last Wednesday.

Here is the best picture I can take of the SD card pins.

@MurphDurtay what board is it?
-
@jay_s_uk Duet 3 mini 5+ Wifi V1.0

@MurphDurtay its probably plagued by the original duet 3 mini SD card issues. one for @Phaedrux
(and i should've read the thread title) -
When and where did you purchase the Duet?
-
@Phaedrux I purchased the Duet in March of 2021 from Filastruder, however I didn't use it until last Wednesday. I don't know where that would put me with the warranty. If I can't warranty it I have a friend with a rework station and some experience with SMD soldering. Do you think re-soldering the SD card reader will fix it?
-
Let me get back to you on how best to proceed.
-
@Phaedrux Ok thanks

We can offer a refurbished unit on exchange at reduced cost, or if you want to pursue to repair option with your friend with a hot air rework station I can point you at the areas to reflow that may solve the issue.
Another option is to actually use a Raspberry Pi and run the Duet in SBC connected mode. The SD card slot on the Duet doesn't get used at all in this configuration.

@MurphDurtay further to the reply above, we can supply you with a refurbished Duet 3 Mini at no cost. If you wish to go this route, please email warranty@duet3d.com and include a link to this thread in your email.
If you want to try rework, the part most likely to need reworking is U3 which is a tiny 16-pin chip behind the SD card socket. This is difficult to rework because of its small size; however it is often sufficient to put liquid no-clean flux on each side and use a hotplate and hot air to reflow the solder. The nearby plastic connector must be protected from the hot air, also take care not to overheat the SD card socket because it has plastic parts inside - and remove the SD card from the socket first.

@dc42 Thanks! I'll send an email for a refurbished unit. My friend looked at the chip he would need to reflow and said he wasn't confident he could do it.

@Phaedrux I do eventually want to use the duet in conjunction with a raspberry pi, but they are hard to find right now and if you can find them they are ridiculously overpriced.
