This is still a standard in 2020, just for different things. And RJ45 would be an overkill for CAN bus and just to bulky.
Also you could really read that before you did by the board, and they is no "HOPE they fit my crimpers". Or you have RJ11 compatible crimpers or not, you should know what tools you have... -

I just realize you guy used rj11 instead of rj45 like normal person in 2020.
i want to see you sticking an rj45 connector into an standard asdl modem. you are gonna be surprised to find them to be rj11. even in 2020.

HAHAHAHAHAHA !
With respect to Duet3, I personally think it's a good idea to have RJ11 for the CAN and RJ45 for the Ethernet. Stops me putting things in the wrong hole !
Remember Duet3 CAN wiring is 1:1 on the RJ11.
Cross over cables often come bundled with modems etc.RJ11 lives matter.

RJ11 lives matter.
(but nobody cares about RJ10 and RJ12!)
-
RJ11 and RJ45 are not the same at all.
Using RJ11 for the CAN Connections on the Duet 3 makes sense.
The CAN bus has no need of the pins or the capabilities of a RJ45 connection.
So take a deep breath and relax.

For making CAN connections, I mostly use ready-made high speed ADSL cables from here https://www.kenable.co.uk/en/search?controller=search&search_query=high+speed+adsl. When I have to make my own cables, I use one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/RJ45-Crimping-Crimps-Plugs-Insertion/dp/B006P0EG7C/ref=sr_1_6.
Both the cables and the crimper are inexpensive.
