Duet 3 or WiFi plus Duex
-
I am building a CoreXY printer that uses 6 steppers. The choice of Duet boards seems to be either a Duet 3 or a Duet WiFi with the expansion board. The Duet 3 is less expensive than the Duet 2 combination and seems like the logical choice from that perspective. Is there a reason to choose the Duet 2 combination?
I have a much modified Monoprice printer using a Duet 0.85. The Duet is by far the best upgrade I have made to that printer. Having climbed the Duet learning curve with good results I won't use anything else.

Obviously Wifi is a difference unless you plan on using a SBC/Raspberry pi (or some sort of externa wifi bridge) with the Duet3.
Next up, the Duet3 6HC will have much less inputs and outputs compared to the Duet 2 + Duex, so think about how many endstops, fans, lights, triggers, servos etc you will need and check the Duet3 6HC will have you covered.
There is also the Duet3 5LC that can be expanded to have more than 5 drivers, but its not released and at a glance looks to be similar to the Duet3 6HC in terms of having less IO compared to the Duet2.

As of now, Duet 3 is your best option. It costs less than Duet + DueX, and although it has fewer stepper drivers etc (6 vs 10) it is highly expandable via CAN bus.

Or for a lower cost/less pretty route, just a Duet 2 and an external driver board? I have set of stepsticks (old TMC2130s I had laying about) on some breakout boards that drive my independent Z axes.
Downside is no digipot etc on the drivers so using the tiny pot and a multimeter to set them up felt like going back the the stone age... -

100!
Just kidding, I know you meant 10

WiFi is not a requirement as I have wired Ethernet readily available as well as WiFi. It appears the Duet 3 has a wired Ethernet port that can be used in standalone mode like the Duet 2 Ethernet board.As for I/O that is a very good point. At first glance the Duet 3 looks like it has more I/O than the Duet 2, especially outputs. I see the Duet 2/Duex combination does have more I/O if you include the GPIO pins.
Looks like I need to do a little more planning and research.
Thanks

the duet3 is more expandable, but the adittion of the 50 pin expansion means a duet2 even without a duex still beats the duet3 on i/o. the 26pin connector on the duet3 offers no user configurable i/o.
but on the other hand the duet3 has been designed to have enough i/o for most use cases it covers with 6 drivers - it just doesn't lend itself to endless bells and whistles like the duet2 unless you add expansions to the duet3.
and yes, you can use ethernet, byt you did list the topic as 'duet 3 or wifi', so in that contect wifi is a factor.

Love my Duet3 and the toolboard is a huge part of that. Three wires to the toolboard above the hotend and it controls thermister, heater, extruder motor, X endstop, two different fans, and BLTouch. Made setup easier and layout cleaner. That alone is worth the price of admission!

@I_Jedi
I hadn't seen the toolboard. What a great idea! That definitely has me leaning toward the Duet 3. The few additional I/O it adds looks like I should have more than enough for my build with some to spare. -
@wifibeagle YEPPERS!
With the extruder offloaded, I have my triple Z and X/Y and still room for one more motor on the base board.
And TONS of I/O triggers for just about anything you can imagine. I LOVE the flexibility of the Duet3. Buy it and the toolboard, you will not regret it!
