Multi-Material
-
I've got a D-bot with a Duet Wifi and have a Prusa i3 with Multi-Material on order and was thinking that the same process could be implemented on the Duet Wifi, does anyone have a tutorial or something i can look at to try understanding the process. I'd like to set it up similar to the Prusa way with 4 bowden tubes coming together for a single input, I've seen where people use a dual material that way but I'm not sure where to start. I've searched and have not found much, i'm probably using the wrong terminology.

Try here
https://www.duet3d.com/forum/thread.php?id=1451#p13720And also search for prometheus and splitter

Also see the sections at https://duet3d.com/wiki/Configuring_RepRapFirmware_for_a_Cartesian_printer#Tool_definition_section for configuring tools that represent switching and mixing extruders.

thank you, I think also part of my problem is i'm searching for "color" instead of "colour"

wow that is a lot of info to take in lol. I think i'll take my time and start with two and work my way up. I have 9 weeks to figure it out and if I do reliably i'll probably cancel my Prusa order (or not idk) Thanks for the directions!

Is it possible to use a direct extruder combined with bowden extruders for loading and unloading filaments? for example. the main extruder is the direct one (titan) and the bowden ones off to the side just handle unloading and loading of the filament, and once the filament is loaded it turns off and allows the direct extruder to do the work?

The thing I'm waiting for is prusa post processing script which will generate the prime towers.
-
I kind of like this option better, in theory anyways, you do not lose print space to a tower and I believe the color change would happen quicker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM3e9dSCicQ

Post processing script is not needed as it is built-in into Slic3r now (Prusa Edition)

It should be possible, using macros.

Or you could just get a Diamond hot end, do what I do and use a script to move the tool change points, and print without pausing and without any wipe or prime towers. Like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tPtn3urQ3g. As described in my blog here https://somei3deas.wordpress.com/2017/01/24/latest-update-to-blog-6th-jan-multi-colour-printing-without-wipe-and-prime-towers/

Yeah the dump area idea is probably less wasteful. You can mix extruder types sure as long as each is calibrated correctly.
There's a lot to commend mixing hotends like diamond such as wipe and prime-free colour printing, Ian is resident expert there. Switching is just easier in some ways, trickier in others.
To be fair I got dual extrusion setup and working then gave up on it as my flying bracket was making my machine heavy, slow and less accurate. Dual/triple cable driven extruders would probably be the optimum.
