Help choose: Maestro vs WiFi
-
The FPU isn't needed on a corexy. the maestro will process faster than you can print with its cpu. I ordered the maestro for my corexy. I had to have the option of silent printing as a request of my wife. She was happy when I switched to the tmc2130s I have currently. I also opted to have ethernet over the built in wifi module. I will have a small access point attached to my printer stand. I think that will give better network performance than the single antenna on the DUET Wifi. Plus I have a little money left over for some other printer part! Oh also stallguard isn't that great. I have used it on my 2130s. They seem to have less accuracy than a standard limit switch. If you ever plan on power recovery, you won't want to use it. I don't know how the prusa gets away with it.

Thank you!! ))) Right now I have a problem with overnight prints because of my wife So that was my main concern But maybe someone could tell the difference between silentchop and "regular" x256 mode?
-
I can't speak for the drivers on the duet but the 2130s are pretty different between modes. in stealthchop the only noise that can be heard is the part cooling fan. When I print abs at 60mms without the fan you can stand next to the printer and not know it was running (a quick note, I use noctua fans everywhere but the part cooler and nippon linear bushings all around) in spreadcycle it is not too bad. I would say a bit quieter than most drivers out there. I am currently set up with 12v. I am told they are better under 24v.

https://youtu.be/pYNwgpBxzKA <- 50mms? print on carbon rails with igus bushings with stealthchop
https://youtu.be/DWFjq-QLerY <- on nippon bushings still stealthchop

Have found good comparison video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRrJK5jTZSA

Never trust on M3D

@briskspirit You also have the choice of Duet Ethernet - it doesn't have to be the WiFi version.
Or if you are not in a hurry maybe wait to see what gen 3 Duet can offer?
-
@deckingman Trying to wait... it is difficult to wait ))) That is why I am distracting myself with extruders upgrade ))
@dc42 Can you please tell something about Duet 3? This year or next year? Please
-
@briskspirit I suspect that there will be some sort of announcement at the TCT show which starts next Tuesday (25th). That's just my gut instinct though.
These things usually go through a beta testing phase, then pre-production boards, then final production so I would imagine that launch date would still be some time away (but I could be wrong).
-
Duet 3 will ship next year, not this year. We're showing prototypes at TCT but we won't finalise the configurations we manufacture until we have feedback from prospective customers. After or possibly during TCT I'll share with you what we are showing there.
When we have finalised the production configuration, we may open a pre-order system for pre-production boards at a special price, like we did for the Duet WiFi.

@dc42 I have heard about CAN bus and etc but main question would be about stepper drivers used

You won't be disappointed! However, if you use low current motors and you don't need stall detection, then the TMC2224 drivers on the Maestro are pretty much state of the art.
-
@dc42 This is bad... ))))) Because I need to get a new board now!)
Could these new drivers be used with Duet 2 with some expansion board in future? -

-
@dc42 Those new on future Duet 3
I am leaning towards DuetWiFi now because of Duex5 support(Quad and MMU experiments are possible), convenient to work through WiFi(as I don't plan to buy PanelDue right now). But StelthChop2 attract me too..
-
There is an expansion board to add 2 more stepper drivers to the Maestro too.
-
@dc42 I am using 5 drivers right now (dual extruder setup) and MMU for example needs 3 more ...
Can I add two TMC2224 for X an Y on Duet 2 WiFi?

No, the Duet WiFi doesn't have the extra UART for driving TMC2224.
Maestro + expansion board gives you 7 stepper drivers, enough for a quad hot end. Also enough for MMU I would have thought.
-
@dc42 mmm, need to count again. I have 3 axis + 2 extruders right now. So I can add 2 more steppers(and MMU needs 3 as I saw?)

@briskspirit For what it's worth, my big CoreXYUV sits in a spare bedroom, next to the one my wife and I sleep in. I have the Duet Ethernet plus Duex 5 expansion board and all 10 drivers are fully employed (5 extruders). My moving mass is around 4kgs in the Y direction, and around 2.4kgs in the X direction. I regularly print at 80mm/sec with non-print moves at up to 350mm/sec.
Despite this, with the bedroom door shut, it's barely audible - the loudest noise is from the hot end fan. I've done many many 24hr plus prints whereby the printer has had to run all night and it's never disturbed our sleep, even with just a thin stud and plasterboard wall between our bed and the printer.
So although stealth chop will make it quieter, 256x micro-stepping really isn't too bad. If it was my decision, stealth chop would be very low on my list of priorities.
Edit - unless you plan to have the printer in the same room that you sleep in
2nd Edit. I have two XY gantries - one carries the hot end, the second which sits above, carries the 5 extruders. So that's twice the number of motors running compared to most printers.
