Remote Mount Thermocouple Daughterboard?
-
Hi everyone,
I am looking at modifying our Modix Big-60 to be able to control the bed with the Duet2 board (novel concept, I know ). I believe that the Modix build plate uses a Type K thermocouple, so I will need to use a thermocouple daughterboard. The problem is that there isn't a great way to run the thermocouple wires to where the Duet is, so I'd like to mount the daughterboard where the thermocouple wires currently terminate and make a custom extension cable to connect the daughterboard back to the Duet. Is this possible, or is it necessary for the daughterboard to piggyback directly on the Duet? If it is possible, what pitch do the pins on the daughterboard use?
Thanks.

@NIKwithoutaC I don't know what sort of temperature sensor Modex uses for the bed, but I would be surprised if it is a thermocouple, because thermocouples are normally only used when the temperature is higher than a thermistor, PT100 or PT1000 sensor can handle.
If it uses a Duet3D thermocouple or PT100 daughterboard then the connection between the main board and daughterboard is SPI. The maximum recommended cable length between the two is 300mm. The connector pitch is 2.54mm so a standard 1.27mm pitch ribbon cable can be used.

Have you been in contact with Modix support regarding your heated bed?

The temperature controller on the Modix appears to be configured for a thermocouple, so I am making an assumption here. The documentation for the printer doesn't state what type of sensor it is. I intend to confirm with Modix what it is before I start buying parts. Right now, I'm still in an exploratory phase.
Thanks for the info!

I have asked them in the past if they offer parts to convert the printer to allow the Duet to control the bed and I was told that they do not.

As an update- it is, in fact, not a thermocouple. I must be misunderstanding the function of the temperature controller. Modix confirmed it is a NTC100K Thermistor B 3950-1%. So, I guess I needlessly went down this rabbit hole.

I know that they use an external controller for the larger printers, is that also the case here?
