Reasons to upgrade from duet Wi-Fi 2?
-
I currently have a few duet Wi-Fi 2, primarily on a delta with a smart effector. I previously assumed duet 3 was the only hardware RRF3 would run on, so my desire to upgrade was primarily firmware driven, to get those fancy new features. Now I see I can update my 2 to rrf3. I don't mean this to sound skeptical or like "change my mind" guy, but sincerely, is there a reason I should buy a 3? The smart effector wouldn't benefit from the tool board? I use a panel due, if that matters. The specs seem great but idk that the hardware jump matters. Are there any features of RRF3 that aren't supported by duet 2 Wi-Fi, that would apply to generic delta builds?

I am running 3.3 on a pair of Duet 2 WiFi/Duex 5 combos. It works fine.
But the next version, 3.4, is running up against the limits of Duet 2 hardware memory.
IF 3.5 grows as much as 3.4 grew over 3.3 then 3.4 is likely the last version for Duet 2 hardware.
Those Duet 2 boards were the last ones I bought. Everything since has been Duet 3.

I'm hoping to convert my Duet2Ethernet to use the SBC using a finalized version of the mod that showed up to help with the limitation but it seems to have died out and no one ever posted something I could follow well enough.

Firmware wise there is currently no limitation on the Duet 2 compared to Duet 3. However, we're starting to hit the limit of available flash memory on the Duet 2, so eventually it may become feature locked. However, even now it is quite feature complete.
You can see the hardware features of the Duet 3 here: https://docs.duet3d.com/en/Duet3D_hardware/Duet_3_family
It's up to you if you think you benefit from any of that compared to what you have.
I would say that if you already have a Duet 2, there is no major reason to update unless you need more powerful drivers or more expansion or want to use an SBC. And if you're starting a new build, consider starting with a Duet 3. The mini5+ is a Duet 2 replacement in a lot of ways.

@phaedrux if I'm being honest one consideration besides liking shiny new things, is I've been in and out learning and such on this forum for ages since the last time I spent money and I think I should do my part to keep the doors open that said this rapido still can't hit temp so maybe starting over on a new board would help

Ha. I guess I'm not being a very good salesman. How's this... BUY THREE, one for you, one for your friend, and one for the missus.
