Try different USB cables and ports as well. It may not be getting enough power from the port.

@phaedrux thanks. how the hell do I rectify that? I've tried all the ports and 3 different cables

@m3pho have you tried turning the PC off and on again? Sometimes Windows gets into a state in which it can't access a USB device. If you connected the Duet to the PC via a USB hub, it's also possible for the system to get in a state in which Windows stops talking to some of the ports on the hub (disconnecting the hub from the PC and reconnecting it sometimes fixes this).
Another possibility is that it isn't running valid firmware. If that's the case, you will need to use the Erase button or jumper and then re-flash using Bossa.

tried turning it off and on several times, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the driver.
I'm getting 4.75v at the 5v pins so not far off. Will try it on a PSU and see if anything different happens and if the on board 5v supply makes any difference to the USB one. Tried another laptop too and that won't detect it either. The DIAG LED is on all the time which suggests no firmware, but I can't flash it if I can't connect to it, can I? can anything be done via the SD card?
Also the fan fuse has blown. it's been messed with... I was sold it as "new and unused" but clearly it has been used.
I'm sending it back to the seller. Not worth the hassle chasing problems. Reliability was the main reason I bought it after similar issues with a bricked BTT board.

@m3pho if it has dud firmware installed then you need to use the Erase procedure. That should cause the Bossa port to appear on the PC in Device Manager. https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Installing_and_Updating_Firmware#Section_Fallback_procedure_Num_2

I don't see any changes to the lights or anything happening when I go through the erase process. Still nothing on device manager and nothing on Bossa either.
-
If the cables are good for both data and power with other devices, then it may just be a defective board.

Do you still get noises and/or error messages in Windows when you connect the USB cable?

nothing whatsoever from the laptop

In device manager, can you go to View > Show Hidden Devices and see if anything shows up in the listing?
