@vapvap You mentioned "load the filament into the tube and start the print program" so I assumed that on your current machine you manually load the filament though the extruder and advanced it until it was coming out the nozzle. then start the print?

Basically there are two separate processes going on.

Setting up the printer so the filament is in the hotend, and ready to print

starting a print

sorting out 1) involves getting the filament through the extruder, down the bowden tube and into the (hot) hotend. You can do that by manually setting the hotend to the appropriate temperature, loading the filament into the extruder, and then using the printer controls to push the filament down the bowden tube. until it comes out the nozzle. Or you could to that through some automatic "load filament" mechanism. In our case we have the ability to automate that through a load filament macro.

From the research I have done, it seems that 12bit DACs will not work, and you need to use 16bit DACs. Someone in the Marlin development has already started created code to drive Galvos:

And from what I seen it is not to difficult to hook up the DACs to the Arduino, or atleast so it seems.

@timcurtis67 I think the Replicape (soon to be Revolve) documentation is pretty decent actually, but this is coming from someone who can write any code that I want myself that is not included at the launch date. It's a pity that RRF is not on more boards.

I think ESP WiFi is not reliable enough either based on what I've gathered not only in this forum, but other products that utilize the ESP WiFi modules. Ethernet is king 🙂

1. Yes there are people using RRF with no heaters. Why would a program for sending CNC GCode send M105?

2. You can configure the response of RRF to M0 by providing a stop.g file. If stop.g is provided, it doesn't turn the motors off.

How about using two flat CAT6 cables? One for low voltage stuff (temp sensor and Z probe) and one for heaters and fans?

Mind the heater current doesn't exceed the cable rating.

When you’re dealing with high currents “simple” is a bit of a relative term. Resistance has a nasty habit of changing as things heat up. Admittedly it goes up for cheap copper heaters so a cold measurement would suffice for a safety check.

Having said that, insulation is a bit of a relative term when dealing with cheap imports.

DC is, of course, right though - current measurement is definitely a nice to have and almost certainly not worth the additional cost.

The problem with that approach is that you can either mount the SD card as a removable drive, or the electronics can access files on it; but not both at the same time. Smoothieboard users sometimes get into a mess because they forget which mode it is in.

Ah, I didn't noticed. It seams that I'm one of those users 🙂

We may change Erase to be a jumper on the next generation Duets. In the meantime, setting the Erase button further back as we do on 1.02 and later revision Duets has greatly reduced the risk of pressing it by accident.

Would most likely mean just quite a "few" 0ohm resistors and a larger sized board (which isn't bad in terms of heat dissipation though).

Like I said, we're looking at alternative connectors for the next generation - the current Duets don't have enough space for anything else. I already have some samples of lever-operated terminal blocks, and we are evaluating XT30 connectors too. We're also considering the same type of screw terminals that most PSUs have.

And thereby hangs the problem - there is no standard for Chinese steppers. Sometimes the cables are wired directly with no socket on the motor, sometimes there is a socket but as David pointed out, the pinout may differ from motor to motor.

But it's not just steppers. Sooner or later you'll need to change a heater cartridge or a thermistor or some other part and the chances are high that the replacement will have no connector, or the wrong type of connector, or the lead will be too long (or too short). There is no getting away from the fact when you start tinkering, sooner or later you'll have to start fitting your own connectors. It's not to difficult - even a 64 year old with no experience can learn how to do it 🙂

To provide serious additional protection to stepper drivers, you need to use varistors, inductors and capacitors. See page 20 of the TMC2130 datasheet for an example.
