Are you sure the cooling fans on the extruder doesn't already provide enough vibration to pick up on a piezo? I can definitely hear a change in acoustics when the nozzle touches the bed, and I suspect this would make a perfectly useful way to probe, especially if you made a filter (software or hardware) on the piezo that was tuned near the peaked of the the vibration spectrum from the fan.

that is very strange. can you check by running M906 in the console that the motors are actually set to that current.

then can you measure the resistance of one phase of the stepper z motor?

My only feedback would be to make sure the mechanical relay is rated at 10A or more. Otherwise it looks like a typical install.

Common causes of heat creep:

Incorrectly assembled hot end. There must be a gap of several mm between the heater block and the bottom of the heatsink, bridged only by the smooth part of the heat break. Fan mounted the wrong way round, so that it is sucking air out of the heatsink instead of blowing into it. Normally, the fan label should be towards the heatsink (so it is not visible). DO NOT swap over the fan wires, because brushless DC fan motors are not reversible. Print cooling fan blowing too much on the nozzle and heater block (instead of at the print) and no silicone sock over the heater block.

not sure if you can use the maestro expansion as dumb drivers, you will not be able to use them as smart drivers as the firmware will only work with other 2660 and not a mix of 2660 + 2224
