External SD Drive
-
Hi All,
Will it be possible to fit a simple external fascia mounted SD card drive to the new DuetWIFI?
While I'm sure all the web interface and wifi will be very good, a simple full size SD card option like many printers have would be handy to have.

Hey Corexy the facility is there in hardware and it's in the firmware wishlist:

See point E.
I am not sure when it will be added to the firmware yet.

Copy that and thank you.
I think it would be handy for people out there (like myself) who just use the printer for repeated prints, and aren't really computer tech savvy.

Corexy, is there a reason you don't want.to upload your gcode files to the built in SD card over the web interface? Once they are on the SD card you can repeat print them using whatever control mechanism you like (web interface, PanelDue or USB).

No not really, but given so many printers use an SD card, would it hurt to have one as an option?
If only for the odd person who doesn't have wifi, or for when the router is broken or something?
I hope I haven't offended in asking?
You don't have to do it if you don't want to, I still bought the thing.
It is a "wish list" isn't it?

You haven't offended me, it is on the wish list, and it will get implemented.

No worries.
So have I ordered the right items?
I got the Duet wifi, the panel due and the type k daughter board for my Zortrax conversion (I'm Hobbymods on the reprap forum).
Do I need to buy a fascia mounted SD drive and cable of some sort?

The display panel that comes with your PanelDue (if you ordered the complete kit) or that you buy yourself (if you just ordered the controller board) will almost certainly have an SD card socket built in. It will be possible to solder a connector on the back of the PanelDue controller board and connect that to the external SD card connector on the Duet WiFi. Either T3P3 or myself or both will quite likely sell connector + cable kits to make this easier.

Thank you, that's great.
I just bought the lot from the preorder menu and saw that it mentioned there was an SD slot in the paneldue set.
Obviously I will make myself familiar with the online interface or whatever, and I'm sure it's a good/better thing, but seeing as it's already fitted there surely the old "caveman backup" being connected would be common sense?
I think it's a great idea for you to sell the cables/connector required, as it just seems simpler to buy the whole set from yourselves with the Duet board, as then we know it's all going to fit and work together.

I was thinking about connecting the SD card on the PanelDue as mentioned. Looking at the schematic I see the SD connections to the TFT connector, are these being used or just there for soldering convenience? I also do not see power to the SD socket, just ground and the SPI interface, am I overlooking something?

The SD card connector is intended to be used with the SD card socket on a 3.3V version of PanelOne (which is not yet supported in firmware) and on PanelDue. Both of these supply 3.3V power to the SD card. In fact we have just started shipping PanelDue version 2.0 boards, which have a matching ribbon cable connector for the SD card. The impending arrival of PanelDue 2.0 boards is why we dropped the special offer pricing of PanelDue boards ordered with a Duet WiFi a few weeks ago. It's possible to use the SD card socket with PanelDue version 1.1 boards too, but the wiring isn't as simple.
-
When would we start receiving 2.0 PanelDues if we oredered one? From which supplier(s)?
-
AFAIK there are no PanelDue 1.1 boards left in the distribution channels, so all PanelDues shipped from this week should be version 2.
