V6 K type Thermocouple supplied much to short
-
Hello
I am building a 400mm square hypercube and decided to purchase the thercouple board with a V6 K type thermocouple for my hot end. I have just got to fitting the hot end and the wires on the Thercouple supplied are about 200mm long which i did not see on the order form and I assumed would be the same as the thermistor. Reading the other topic on here it seems I need to get special wire to extend the sensor.
The printer will be fully enclosed so the copper wire option seems a no go, I can purchase a 1 meter version K type thermocouple for £12 but this seems expensive considering what I already paid for the short one I was supplied.
From my reading I will need wires made up of two different metals matching the sensor but i can not find the details of the one supplied with my duet. I will be extending the cables around 1.5 meters to the duet housed in the base of the printer.
Hope someone can help
Cheers

Your only option, that won't cause issues with your thermocouple readings is to put an inline thermocouple connector.
These connectors can be purchased from Omega Engineering here:
Miniature Size Thermocouple ConnectorsMake sure to select type K, with the IEC color code.
I would put the splice pretty close to the extruder, that way you can run the extension cable the whole way and have the connector accessible if you ever need to work on the hotend.
You can find thermocouple extension wire here:
Thermocouple Extension Wire
Or Here:
Stranded K-type Thermocouple Wire AWG 24 with Kapton Insulation Extension 5 yardI know it's probably more than you were planning on spending, but if you want to use a thermocouple, then it's kinda your only option unfortunately.

Oh wow that would would push me far over budget.
Do you think I could cannibalise something like this?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/K-Type-Thermocouple-Temperature-Probe-5mm-Diameter-400-C-2M-Cable-Mini-Connector/162899313828?hash=item25ed8e44a4:g:kJIAAOSwNt1agcDII could make my own connections, none of them seem to list the material they are made of so I am not sure if the cable would work.
thanks for the information above.

I suggest you search eBay for "K-type thermocouple extension". The designation "K-type" defines the materials that the wires are made of.

@dc42 Thanks that is perfect

@hulgarth the cable should have been supplied 1m long, if it came at 200mm that is very confusing as we buy them directly from e3d at 1m.

@t3p3tony I just double checked and you are right, I must have got it confused with another cable. Sorry for the confusion.
