Filament monitor dimensions and step files
-
Hi,
I'm designing a toolhead that uses the Duet Filament Monitor and I could not find dimensions and/or CAD files for the housing.
I did find the step files of the PCB but it's of little to no use to design mounting solutions.
For example, I can't find the distance between the two holes that can be used to screw the housing onto a flat surface. I would also need their position relativ to the filament path.
Of course, I can measure these from the STL files, but I think these are important information missing from the documentation.
I searched here :
https://docs.duet3d.com/en/Duet3D_hardware/Accessories/Rotating_Magnet_Filament_Monitor
and here :

Yeah, I'm looking also. I bought the bare kit because it said "we provide a design" but I also can't find the design. My printer is all designed by me so I want to design a housing for it that is designed for my printer, not adapted to it.

Which filament monitor version specifically are you looking for?

@Shoki the filament monitor housings are designed in OpenSCAD, and are the .scad files in the repository eg this is the stl and .scad files for v3 https://github.com/Duet3D/FilamentMonitors/tree/master/Filament_Monitor_Magnetic/version3/enclosure
If you want a more usual CAD version, user @Lo-Fi has made an improved housing for v1 and v2 in OnShape. See https://forum.duet3d.com/post/316039

@Phaedrux The Magnetic Filament Monitor V3. I was actually hoping they'd have a dimensioned drawing so I can create a housing to integrate in to my machine instead of a pre-designed housing that I'd have to adapt.

Found the files from Duet. I was in the instructions and found you have to click on the "kit" instructions. They are in there. I'll print out the factory version and go from there using the dimensions there.

@Phaedrux
I was looking for version 3.
I saw it was designed in openscad but unfortunately i'm not very good at it I can't even get the dimensions i need to design my own housing. -
Which CAD program are you wanting to use? If you can load the STL in it, you can probably measure it there.
Same for prusaslicer, you can measure the STL in the preview.
-
@Phaedrux Yes this i what I ended up doing with PrusaSlicer 2.6.
It's just that it is less convenient than having a step file I can directly integrate into my cad design and modify simply without having to redesign everything from scratch.
-
I haven't tried this myself, but it may be an option. FreeCAD can apparently convert scad to step.

Apologies for resurrecting this old topic but I am currently also looking for .step files to properly design the toolhead of my printer.
Also sorry for the criticism that follows, I am usually very fond of Duet3d's products but I think it's a bit of a shame that for a 70€ sensor that is mostly installed in custom 3D printers, there is no step file readily available from the manufacturer. The available stl file is great for printing purposes but sub-optimal for CAD design.
I think this .step file could be easily made available and spare the designers (and potential customers!) the headache to dig through the whole internet or create the model themselves.
