How to test, E3D Thermistor says 2000c

How do I use my meter to test the board/wires. I have spare thermistors but they all read the same. Backstory is when a print was just finishing I smelled something like burning plastic, and saw smoke on my hot end (ABS) The hot end looked like something ha come loose during the print so I disassembled hot end and cleaned it up. The thermistor was reading normally before I got to work on it. I turned it on to heat the hot end to take it apart. it went up to 225 just like normal, then gave me an error. I assumed it was where I had started taking screws out of the hot end while it heated, and so turned it off.
How do I use my meter to test the board/wires. I have spare thermistors but they all read the same. should I have resistance when I touch the 2 pins, or should they be open with the machine off and no power to it. I'm assuming to unplug the machine for these readings.

Unplug the thermistor connector from the Duet, poke wires into the holes at the end of the socket, and measure the resistance between them. You should read about 100K at room temperature. Also check that your meter reads infinite resistance between each thermistor lead and the hot end metalwork.
