3 wire Fan on DUET 3
-
HI
the last thread was quite old, so I just opened a new one.
I have a 3 wire fan to be used as board cooler. Is it possible to use it or not on a DUET3? maybe with the tacho signal? -
Should plug straight in, but you won't be able to control the speed. Alternatively you can wire an adapter to get speed control, but you'll loose the tachometer (i.e. it won't work properly if you pwm the fan ground)

As @bearer says, you can't use the tacho if you use PWM to vary the fan speed. So a 3 wire fan is OK for cooling the heatsink, where you have the fan either on or off. If you want speed control too, use a 4 wire fan.

Happy new Year and thank you so much for reacting so fast!
So 3 wire @ PWM but without tacho should work?thx

Probably; but 2 and 3-wire brushless DC fans were never intended to work with PWM. In practice, some do and some don't.

In my experience, yes. I'd still hook up the tach signal, but you can't trust the RPM reading when controlling the speed. However if I recall correctly it'll still be usable as a running/not running feedback, at least with the fans I tested.
