Burnt Y-Axis Motor on brand new board?
-
Hi guys,
Has anyone ever experienced a motor failure on a brand new board?
I am really scratching my head with this one... I have a number of Duet 2 Wifi boards in different machines, have never had an issue with any of them, which is why I continue to use them - great quality boards in my experience.
Today I hooked up a brand new Duet 2 board to a machine that I was already using, it had an MKS board in it and worked perfectly this morning.
Anyway, I disconnected everything, installed the Duet board, connected 7” screen (check), connected power (check), end stops (check), confirmed phases and plugged in motors.- pressed Home X (worked perfectly, Z dive then X to end stop)
- pressed Home Y (Z dived as per usual then the driver puffed a touch of smoke and hissed)
Confirmed the Y motor had not coincidentally failed by plugging in to Z driver and moved correctly with dive; no issues with the motor.
I am an engineer so like to think my training keeps me aware of potential shorts, I was shocked to say the least.
After searching high and low for a short I couldn’t find anything, I ended up reinstalling the MKS board with the wiring exactly as it was when the driver burned and to my surprise, it worked perfectly!Que pasa? I’m out of logical faults that could have caused this?
Can anyone help with some clarity here?

It sounds like an infant mortality failure of the driver chip. Assuming it's a genuine Duet, your board will be replaced under warranty. Please contact your supplier.

Thanks for the prompt response. I imagine this is a rare fault?
I will head over to the original supplier tomorrow and complete the warranty.
