Looms

Whats are peoples thoughts about wiring looms?
I hate the mess of cables, and would much rather have a loom on the printer, a loom on the duet and one or two connectors that link them. Looking at 2 x 24 pin molex at the moment. Will make it really easy swappping boards out between printers too. x

there are some people on the forum who used cat 5/6 cables to reduce the number of wires.
i used a nylon sleeve from an old atx power supply to make the cables neat.

Additional connectors introduce additional failure points, so it's a tossup between convenience and reliability. Add more connectors for tool changer / quick change and any search for a bad connection becomes a long ordeal rather than checking both ends of a cable.
Tidy wire routing on the other hand is an underappreciated form of craftsmanship (-:

I tried Cat 5 but didn't like the bulk.
A standardised loom would be cool, be like having a plugin ecu, that could be whipped in and out easily.

Yes indeed on both counts!

The Duet 0.6 had a header for a wiring loom, 40 pin AFAIR, but it never took off so it was dropped in subsequent Duets.
For Duet 3 we've made some prototype tool head boards, so that only power and CAN bus need to go to the tool instead of 10 to 16 wires.

@dc42 Yes I saw the tool boards and the Duet3 at TCT and I want them!!!

I use several different sizes of this:

(from a differnt supplier but these guys look much cheaper )
All my external wiring on the Printer and CNC uses this and the effect is great.
For the Delta's main loom I use a softer and more flexible version (sorry, no link) and it is really nice being able to carefully re-run a single cable without disturbing the rest.
