Seeking Feedback From Users of Mutant System
-
Hi,
I got my hands on a Wham Bam Mutant v2 "Starter Kit".
It looks pretty nice.
But has anyone here actual used the product? I don't want to start down a road that is actually a dead end.
Thanks much.

@fcwilt Thomas Sanladerer did a review of the v1 and I think there were some issues with the connector. V2 looks like it has fixed that with POGO pins, but not sure how well those pogo pins can carry the required amperage.
I've thought about getting the system but I could never really justify it or find a use for it. Maybe if you have multiple tools and want to tinker it would be good, but I always just wanted to stick it on a toolchanger instead to save myself time.

I’m currently using the Mutant with a 1LC tool board on my big CoreXY. I have no complaints, other than the supplied mounting pattern was a bit tricky to design my printhead around.
I have been in touch with Peter, the owner of Whambam, a few times. Really good guy. He’s commissioned me to design an industrial toolhead to help promote the Mutant.

One problem with going with a system that is very dependant on a single supplier is what happened with the Xchange from printermods.
I noticed there is a UK based company calling itself printermods , wonder how many complaints they get from former U.S. based printermods customers. Was lucky since I live fairly close to where they were based and knew people who dealt with them. Avoided investing an an ecosystem that is now defunct.

Indeed that can be a problem.
Of course if everyone avoids small suppliers they create the very situation they fear.
I was a fan of the Zesty Nimble and have it on all my printers - now the company is gone.
If I decide that the Mutant system is the way for me to go I will simply have to buy a enough parts now to see me through the future.
Thanks.

@fcwilt Sounds like the thought I have with extra parts for my printers including an extra Duet board just in case.
I thought Zesty still existed. I never bought one but they are popular with some around here.

@KenW
The Zesty "founders" are still around and promising that parts will be available - we shall see.
