Can a 6HC work as an expansion board?

Can I set one up as an expansion board for the other? Or must I use 3HC?
I can do 6HC + 3HC (just needs 3 drivers) but I happen to have 2x 6HCs and would like to avoid spending extra money if I can for now.

@jrdm this feature is currently experimental in firmware 3.4.0 beta 6. It is only partly functional in RRF 3.3.
