Duet 2 expansion board for external drivers
-
Hi there,
the last days i upgraded my second printer with a original duet 2 wifi board. Coming from Skr with tmc2209 the duet 2 drivers are a bit too loud for me so i am looking for a way to use external stepper drivers which supports silent step. The duet shop and wiki not gave me satisfied solutions. Then i found this:
https://m.de.aliexpress.com/item/4001273329739.html?spm=a2g0n.seo-amp-detail.productBottomBar.viewDetailsIs this also available from duet as original hardware?
Does it works with duet 2?
Does it has any disadvanteges to use this with external drivers instead of the on board drivers? The other way could be the duet 3 but i don't like that it has no wifi and that i have to change all cable connector shells to fit the duet 3
Or du you have other ideas?
Thank you very much

Nothing with stepstick sockets available from Duet3d afaik.
This is the official breakout: https://www.duet3d.com/Expansion_Breakout
The downside to using external drivers is you need to use the same TMC2660 drivers if you want them "smart" so you can set currents via uart/spi etc. If you don't mind using them as dumb (or provide external configuration) then no problem.

there is the duet3 mini, apparently back in production as of next week

Interesting, the board i linked is without drivers so you can use all drivers like tmc2209. Do you know if this will work.
Another thing i noticed about the duet 3 sadly it uses different connector shells for some connectors didn't know why this changed. I liked the duet 2 just uses 1 type of connectors..

@PuddingBaer91 With the breakout board (which is the same as the AliExpress link, just that one is a clone) you can connect any driver externally that supports step/direction (you may even be able to do it without the breakout board, depending on driver). However, you won't be able to use the 'nice' features of drivers such as TMC2209, as there's no SPI connection to set these. See https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Using_external_stepper_motor_drivers
Another thing i noticed about the duet 3 sadly it uses different connector shells for some connectors didn't know why this changed.
So it can support stepper motors that can draw a higher current; the old connectors weren't up to it.

@droftarts thank you. But who needs that much current for a 3d printer? For machines who need this it could be just a duet 3 xl or something.... I think i will try duet 3 to get working.

@PuddingBaer91 y'all want the Duet 3 Mini 5+, not the 6HC
-
@engikeneer ahhh thank you i saw the Duet 3 Mini 5+ has normal connectors except one for the extruder heater. Perfect but sadly not available
-
@PuddingBaer91 should be back available very soon. It was only released a month ago and the first few went like wildfire! I believe the second batch should be getting to resellers in the coming weeks. @droftarts might be able to give more details depending on where in the world you are

@engikeneer thank you that sounds great. I am from germany
