These would make excellent additions to the documentation on how to use variables. The examples of how to use them are not the clearest. For instance the use of the space rather than the "." I really struggled with this. I ended up assuming that I needed to use set for global variables whether declaring them or just using them. I kept getting an error for G (lobal) not a valid command.

I forgot to mention: I put all of my global variables in config.g so they are ready to use right after the printer is powered up or reset.

@adistr have you tried playing with the steprates / u-step settings in the config?
in theory you could give one motor assignment twice as many u-steps as the other and it should more 2x as fast if the same deg/step as the other motor.

That syntax is correct and the docs say random returns a number from 0 to one less than the operand.

So if the docs are correct you will get a variable with 0 or 1.

I'm beginning to wonder if this line of enquiry is actually worth it, to be honest.

It's not as if this is a problem, unless the moving back to Work Zero takes a direct route which could pass through an uncut piece of stock and snapping the tool - or worse.

On completing the job the Z height retracts to the rapids (safe) height in the gcode file, I think, but Z(max-3), for example, would be much better - and a lot safer!

I'm guessing this isn't a printer application?

The first sections give some idea on how gcodes are processed, and the G0/G1 commands explain how movement is carried out.

What kinematics are you actually using? The default assumption is a cartesian system with an X, Y, Z, and E axis. Movement is coordinated by the firmware to complete the move in XYZ space at the fastest feed rate allowed by the individual axis up to the specified feed rate.

Homing moves are also a particular case, in that movement is started and carried out for the distance specified up until the endstop is triggered.

You've asked a number of fairly specific questions with only a vague idea of what is actually required to happen. Without more details about your endgoals and setup it is hard to recommend solutions.

Well, I think I've got it, but there may be a tweak I could use to improve it, but as I've only got one spindle/tool this will probably do. This pause.g file works and saves the spindle speed to the defined variable:

...and the resume.g file turns the spindle back on, although I think there are a few spurious lines in it now. I'll deal with that in the morning!

@oliof - I'll do that and share with this forum in a new post when I get it in place. I'm a little scared of the kibbitzing part because I'm a poor github repo manager. My usual response to github requests for changes is to stop sharing things on github. Also, a lot of the macros I write are to get me over a specific small issue and then I don't use them much after that and my interest in spiffing them up kind of dies away. But I do try to put in a lot of comments to explain what I'm trying to do so they might be useful inspiration for other people to grab and run with.
