It should be possible to use 2 external drivers with the Maestro, connected to the stepper driver expansion header. The signal levels on that connector are 3.3V so not enough for some types of external driver.
In another post recently, Dave said the first proto runs of D3 external driver expansion boards are delayed by Pandemic. So, soon, in relative terms... with obviously some lack of control over exactly when.
