More than 12 fans
-
I'm on a Duet2/Duex5 and plan to have 4-5 tools on my system, but wanting to use 3 fans per tool (tool fan, part tool and a cooler for the extruder). I probably don't have enough ports to connect them all up to be controlled, but even if I could I can't define more than 12 (0-11). Is it possible to have more on a Duet3 platform possibly with tool boards?

I know it'll be unnecessarily loud, but it may be an option to use always on fans for hotend cooling fans.
I personally would recommend using duet3 / CAN FD capable hardware to use toolboards on a multi tool setup for ease of wiring. Mos/all currently available toolboards have two dedicated fan ports and you may run into current limits running that many fans unless you power them directly and only use the PWM capable IOs to drive them. (my suggestion to use always on fans for the heatsink cooling fan still stands)

@Gamefanatic3D For the current limits on configuration, see https://docs.duet3d.com/User_manual/RepRapFirmware/RepRapFirmware_overview#firmware-configuration-limits
Currently the fan limit is 20 on Duet 3. It would necessitate the use of toolboards, but that would be sensible for multiple tools - you will appreciate the lack of wiring!
You could use a SX1509 expansion board (see https://docs.duet3d.com/en/User_manual/Connecting_hardware/IO_additional_IO#sx1509-expansion-board) for Duet 2, and ask @dc42 to increase the port limit (though memory is very limited on Duet 2 now, it would probably mean sacrificing something else).

Would a tool changer e.g. Hermit Crab, Xchange (are they still available?) suit your needs? One set of wiring and ports and let the software do the rest.

@stuartofmt I am not familiar with what you are referring? Do you have a link?

@droftarts Thank you, I'll look into this. Might be the right solution. Alternatively I had planed to just setup a hardware thermistor, but it would be nice to just control things from the tool change macros. I had thought also going after the firmaware and changing the value, but seems like that might be more work overall.
I'll likely use the Duet3 for my larger format system in the future, but already have this one wired up. Yeah its more wires, but its working. -
