Suggestion for temperature calibration by filament
-
I got this idea when calibrating my toolchanger. I have 4 tools and I used the same transparent PLA for calibrating xyz -alignments. The tools had the same temperature settings but the prints had slightly different colors. I wonder if their nozzle temperature varies.
So the idea is simple: a special filament changes its color by printing temperature. By this we can calibrate easily nozzle temperatures. I have understood that the accurate temperature measuring of the nozzle is not easy. Maybe someone has already provided such filament, or is there some other easy way to check the nozzle temperatures? -
@pertti The assumption that the apparent change in colour is due to slight differences in temperatures between tools is a huge leap, especially with transparent filaments. Are you absolutely 100% sure that there is no other difference between tools? Are the nozzles exactly the same diameter? Is the layer height and width exactly the same? Is the test part identical with exactly the same number of perimeters and exactly the same infill pattern? Is part cooling used and if so, is it identical on every tool? Is the filament itself all from the same reel?

@deckingman Ok, the only difference was the nozzle size, 0.4 and 0.25. Same reel´, just opened, same print settings and part cooling.
But I will test this issue once more with better settings.
Of course it is good to have consistent color in prints. -

That's a fundamental difference. So the layer width will be different, and you might or might not have used a different layer height. The infill will be different too. All of these will affect how translucent the finished part will be so it's highly likely that is the reason for what appears to be a different colour when using transparent filament. If you really believe that differences in colour are solely due to slight differences in temperature between tools, print a temperature tower using a single tool. Leave everything unchanged but vary the temperature every 10mm or so in height.

There is such a filament.
See it here in this YouTube Video. But whether you can use it to adjust the temperatures of the individual tools... I have no idea.
Maybe there is a thermal imaging camera (Flir) more suitable ?
