D3M5+ Instlld Heatr Mosfet Then Smoke When I Plug in the USB?
-
Hello everyone this is my very first post so please forgive me as I am coming and leaving the BigTreeTech world of 3D printer boards in favor of Duet3D products. Anyways I had wired up a board to an Anycubic Chiron that I had bought and gutted for the sole purpose of having a big build volume with premium hardware installed. I had wired up everything and had the Config.g file all configured and lastly I wired up the Bed Heater via a Mosfet mini board and then the bed just started heating and heating without any input (as in I did not elect to have the bed start heating up through fiirmware or what have you) and then I went to plug in the USB cable to the D3M5+ and then I started seeing smoke rise from a specific spot on the board. I no longer have that board and am awaiting the replacment but am currently trying to figure out the error of my ways BEFORE I get the new board and go through the process of installing it again and lastly connect the mosfet to Out0 only to have that board fry again so please tell me what is going on? Am I missing something with the wiring cause on BigTreeTech boards if not all boards I was instructed via a Heater Module Mosfet tutorial to wire the CTL wire directly into the Bed Heater out option of a given board which worked correctly when I had an SKR 1.4 Turbo connected to it but not so much with the D3M5+?

Please provide images of the setup, wire paths, link towhere you got your extra MOSFET board, and the config.g file you used.
Thank you!
-
Depending on the size of the heater you may not need to the mosfet board at all.
Without knowing how things we're exactly wire and what was in the config.g at the time it's impossible for us to guess what happened.
You can find some general information here: https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Choosing_a_bed_heater

@luke-slaboratory Ill get all of that together and honestly I already RMA'd the board so will have to redo everything from scratch again. Ill get that Config.g file if I can find it for you....
-
@phaedrux Its a 400mm X 400mm bed so I believe having a mosfet is in order but then again i do not know of the native capability of the D3M5+ on its own so anyways I will gather at least the Config.g file and post that......
-
@pickett the duet 3 mini can handle up to 18 amps on out0. A 400 X 400 bed is likely higher than that
-
@jay_s_uk so which out would be best to connect to a mosfet for bed heating purposes as the mosfet will handle up to 30amps so all I need is a signal going to the mosfet board indicating it needs to turn on and at what amps it needs to start outputting power at? Honestly I think Ill start a new thread with that question cauase my board is arriving in a few hours and I want to wire it correctly with the mosfet heater module in mind..... But if you do know the best way to configure a mosfet heater module please do let me know thanks in advance.
@Phaedrux for the Anycubic Chiron Ill be configuring an Ender 3 template but will up the bed size of course and will up the voltage on the stepper motors cause I am installing one 48mm 59N.cm 2amp stepper for the X and three 60mm 65N.cm 2.1amp steppers (1 for the Y and 2 for the Z) and finally a basic 34mm 32N.cm 1.2amp pancake stepper for the Extruder so anyways when I get all of that configured Ill post the Config.g file for any advice or tips. This is obviously my first Duet3d install and probably wont be my last! When I had read that this was the board I would ultimately end up on they werent kidding and I wished I would have come over sooner lols

@pickett any output is fine to use. On my duet 3 mini, I have the bed on out1 (using a MOSFET) and the hotend on out2.
-
@jay_s_uk oh ok awesome those slightly bigger out_1 & out_2 in the bottom corner next to the OUT0 and Driver_0? I mean which else could it be lols sorry man Im coming from the BigTreeTech world and I actually found there 1.4 Turbo to be not bad at all I never had any SD card issues like other users did but then again I was always hooked up to Octoprint so go figure. Anyways I will do the Configuration for the same type of setup that you got I just got the replacement board just now and am anxious but cautious too so I do not want to cause that smoke issue like I had before. I had everything all wired up except for the endstops and I went to connect the Mosfet to the OUT0 and then I noticed the blue LED V FUSED light started to blink and there was an audible beep to go along with each pulse of the blue led light on the LED V FUSED light and when I connected the USB cable I would see smoke come up from this section I am about to post a pic to show you where it was coming from let me see if I can remember exactly where the smoke arose from in particular Ill have to post again but hold on.....

@jay_s_uk here is the pic I promised!
-
@jay_s_uk how do I upload a photo via android smartphone?
-
@jay_s_uk the one that says "G3P" that one would smoke a bit whenever I plugged in the USB cable into the board after I had lastly wired up the mosfet to OUT0????
-
Is that a clone mini5+ already?
-
@phaedrux yes is that okay?
-
We'll still help you configure it, but we can't vouch for the quality/accuracy of the hardware.
-
@phaedrux wow I just had a moment there I didnt even think about it honestly but now that I realize it more and more as Im typing this yes its a clone and here I am in this official Duet3D forum I feel dumb but honestly I plan to buy another board and I plan to buy the real deal next time cause like I said I want to throw an official real board into whats left of my Ender 3X but may end up putting the real deal into the Chiron I am currently configuring cause I want to get the max sale price for it. Im trying my hands at becoming a private builder slash seller of sorts specializing in aftermarket higher end components in the frames of stock 3d printers. Whewwwww thanks and sorry I wished I would have just went ahead and spent the extra 40 bucks to get the real deal but only had so much in my budget this payckeck. Ty!
-
@pickett No worries. We're here to help anyone.

@phaedrux it is a Fysetc board so dont know what that means as far as quality I first bought a cloned Duet 2 WiFi off of Amazon USA but could not connect to the board to save my life and just returned it then turned around bought this Fysetc off of eBay whats sad is some sellers, like DirectVoltage.com, as far as I know does not sell the real deal only clones as far as I know and what is most frustrating is I really wanted the Ethernet version cause I have a gigabit switch that I prefer over Wifi for a lot of reasons mostly safety, security, and reliability over Wifi that is floating in the air and can be cracked by anybody with a certain variation of linux and Aircrack-ng properly configured so anyways I had the hardest time trying to find the Ethernet version I just gave up then realized I can simply attach my Raspberry Pi and then connect that via ethernet and boom problem solved at least I think that works like that? That is also why Im here cause I am trying to soak up and learn as much about Duet3d boards as I can! I love how they configured the processing of everything is run through the hardware vs the software like BTT does. Anyways thanks!

@pickett said in D3M5+ Instlld Heatr Mosfet Then Smoke When I Plug in the USB?:
at least I think that works like that?
Yes it does.
-
@phaedrux GOOD!! Awesome now I can have a better selling point of the machine is it can be connected either via USB, Ethernet, SD card, or Wifi but Im pretty sure you can only print over LAN or Wifi via the DWC right? Or if I had issues connecting to DWC are the alternate ways of printing?
