Formbot Troodon RRF 3.1.1 Update
-
@dc42 is their anything I should do to try and get you more info ? I honestly am just gonna change to a genuine duet 2 or 3 but am trying to find out if duet 3 will offer any benefit. Are their plans for any features that the 3 can support cause of increased cpu and sbc like input shaping etc that the duet 2 won't be able to do ?
-
@Robthide37 I would wait for the duet 3 mini to come out. Perfectly suited for Voron style printers with the 2 stepper extension, giving you exactly the 7 drivers needed for QGL, X, Y, and Extruder.
-
@pixelpieper it def seems perfect it is more in line with duet 2 imo right ?

Sorry for getting off-topic.
I consider the Formbot Troodon to be my next 3D printer. I actually have some experience with the Snapmaker 2.0. I'm looking for a machine wit x/y core, large build volume, enclosure,..
But I'm mainly looking for a machine, that is working without much tinkering. Is the Troodon that machine?
I meanwhile found out, that there is no support concerning firmware from the company. I'm not afraid of doing some guided software updates, but that's it. -

the hardware nice. some thoughts on the printer.
the voron team advises against a size bigger than 350x350 for corexy because of belt problem. so the smaller version will be the better choice.
custom duet board. this could potentialy mean that you will need to replace it at some point with a duet 3 + toolboard. (or duet 3 mini 5 + addonboard). this will require a little bit of tinkering, mainly switching connector housing and re crimping a few ends. -

Honestly I have limited knowledge of 3D printer hardware. I think I could manage some tinkering with a community in the background where there are "guides" on how-to. In case of the Troodon I have the feeling it's hard to find other users who could help a newbie. Why will I have to change the board? And, maybe silly question, but what's wrong in using FW 3.0? Is that one buggy?

What would be your choice for the given needs?

i would email them and ask them if they are planning a version with a duet 3.
but limited 3d printer knowledge should not stop you.
i got a 3d printer kit specially so that i had to build it from the ground up and learn about it.there are some 3d printer that are tinker free, but they cost a lot of money
like the Ultimaker S5 or the fusion3 F410 -

I think your best bet would be to create a new thread in the general discussion forum to ask your question on printer recommendations. List your budget and requirements. There are lots of good options in various price ranges.
I can't recommend the Formbot Troodon because it uses a non-standard duet implementation and doesn't offer any firmware updates. It's definitely out of our scope to offer support for it.

@Phaedrux Do you know the safest way to install klipper ? i am wanting to go to genuine duet wifi and run klipper for input shaping . or will you be adding input shaping anytime soon to rrf?
-
-
@PCR Thanks i have been using it for a while but my klipper printer uses input shaping which is much more robust instead of limiting accel at certain frequency it can have multiple freq and also does not alter accel profile at all so no speed loss or issues with corner rounding etc.

That would be a better question for a Klipper centric forum. I don't have any direct experience with Klipper.
As for input shaping, it's an interesting concept and is under investigation, but will have to wait until after RRF3 implementation has matured a bit more.

I meanwhile found out, that there is no support concerning firmware from the company. I'm not afraid of doing some guided software updates, but that's it.I have many years of 3d printer experience and built my own delta printers with duet boards. I was going to build a Voron because they seem (to me) they are possibly the best corexyz design. Because of the lockdown getting all the parts looked to be challenging so I decided to get a Formbot Troodon and would (again) adapt and improve whatever I needed.
To my surprise, it worked great out of the box and I don't get the need to change anything (yet). I did try to upgrade to the latest RRF 3+ but it was too much of a hassle with reduced value, since the machine was working beautifully well with the v2.
I will change some of the hardware eventually, like using a direct drive extrusion, and possibly the board, but only if there are clear benefits which I don't see it at the moment. -
btw i just came across this on singles day

https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005001515387922.htmlWe should start another topic to share info about Troodon/Voron printers!
But thanks for sharing the link, great finding! I definitely need that upgrade! -
@nomukaiki: Thanks, meanwhile I did order an Troodon 300 too. I will upgrade to DDE, but good to hear that the machine is working nice out of the box!

@Phaedrux k i installed klipper and had two things one is i found out that its reading the stallgaurd as short to ground on coil b so it is something with teh way the external steppers connect the diag pin or maybe diff sense resistor. so should be able disable the sg registers and then would work i think . And the other thing is do you knwo what pin the mcu temp is on cuase in rrf its predefined but i don't know if its spi bus or if its just a themistor on a internal pin ?
-
@Robthide37 Probably best to start a new thread with your questions.
