Indirect sensing?

I've been looking at a bunch of the Prusa laser filament sensor mods and have seen the indirect method using a bearing to pick up filament movement as the laser apparently is designed to look at steel etc.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I read somewhere that the laser component of the duet version is similar or the same as the Prusa version.
Has anyone tried making an indirect version of the duet laser sensor with a bearing?
