Noise comparision between 0.8.5 and wifi version ?
-
As some have made an upgrade from former duet version to the Wifi, can someone comment
on the noise comparision between this two stepper drivers ?Regards

Chalk and cheese. I haven't taken any measurements but I thought my delta was reasonably quiet before (Duet 0.8.5, Astrosyn dampers and16 times micro stepping) but since I moved to DuetWiFi it is near silent and can't be heard out side the door of the room it is in. I can comfortably sit and read a book beside it in operation.
Very, very impressed with the performance both noise and overall. Still some issues with random disconnects over WiFi but this is probably due to my network not the board. Highly recommended

I came from a RAMBO board on my printer and it is a night and day difference. Performance is awesome! I just made my first real print yesterday.
pjr3D, you bring up an interesting question… should I remove my Astrosyn dampers now that it's so much quieter inherently? Something soft in the drive system must be at the expense of some accuracy.
Any thoughts on this from the community?

The astrosyns may actually IMPROVE print quality, depending on your hardware. Part of the reason why they're so effective is that the elastomer hardness and hysteresis is tuned for the torque and speed range used by steppers. So they absorb the kinds of motion you don't want, while generally passing through the desired drivetrain forces. For example, ringing may die out faster with dampers. They definitely reduce resonance issues that you can otherwise see with coarse (eg 1/4) microstepping.
That said, some drivetrain issues could be worse with dampers, like if you have a lot of friction drag in your linear stage. Then, the springiness of the rubber will cause the motor to lag behind the desired position a bit more than it otherwise would. The stepper itself already lags under load, but the damper would make it worse.
Personally, I can't tell a difference in print quality with/without dampers on any of my printers. It might be slightly better, or I might be imagining that. And I'm pretty picky about prints.

@RCarlyle
Good input. That makes sense. Thanks! -
Thanks for your feedback.
The noise level of the 0.8.5 is currently some of the drivers I'm thinking to order the wifi version.
As this is more a comfort funcionality, I was not sure if this justifies another 99 GBP, but I get more to the impression,
it does.regards

I would second that - I had a RUMBA installed in a BigBox and it's a lot of funky motor noise and sounds, now with the DuetWifi just very light stepper sound and almost no funky stepper tunes. Damn good print quality too.

I'm now looking for quieter cooling fans if that tells you anything. The difference is massive.

A short video of my corexy with DuetWifi printing: https://youtu.be/llArYEVT2ow
The motor for the camera lens focus and the cooling blower on the DuetWifi are the noisiest things.

Likewise a massive reduction in noise.. I basically can't hear the steppers over the fans now..
