A guide/manual for the new variables feature?

Just wondering - is there any sort of guide/tutorial on how to use the variables? I can't seem to find it and would love to dig into it.

My main problem to be solved at this time is to be able to pass temps from the slicer into a macro. In the old days, I'd use an extra tool and set that, but with 3.3b1 - this is no longer an option (I get an unknown value 'offsets^' error).
