its your wiring to the duex that is causing the problems
did you adhere to the wiring described here?
https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Duex2_and_Duex5_Features#Section_Wiring -
seem like a lot of time-outs.
About the wiring:
- ribbon cable --> check
- short connection of the 2 GNDs --> check (30mm cable) (in my configuration the duet2 and the duex5 are mounted back to back with 20mm of air flow gap) The gap is ventilated by 2 fans. The electronics compartment is under the heat bed and is againd ventilated by a big fan. The temperatures never rise beyond 45 °C.
- low resistance --> check, 2,5 mm²
- not reversed --> check

try the wiring as it is in the pictures. maybe that helps.

@Veti but why would that help?
-
@taconite
i seem to remember that the i2c error can stem from grounding issues. -

3.1.0
just for completeness. you should update to 3.1.1
-
I tried multiple times - failed multiple times (got stuck) and I had to bossa back to 3.1.0.

what was the error?

Sounds like you might be missing some files.
Try uploading the entire 3.0 zip file and then the 3.1.1 zip file.
https://github.com/Duet3D/RepRapFirmware/releases/download/3.0/Duet2and3Firmware-3.0.zip
https://github.com/Duet3D/RepRapFirmware/releases/download/3.1.1/Duet2and3Firmware-3.1.1.zip
Upload them one at a time to the system tab in DWC. Don't extract them first.
