Duet 2 or 3 for Corexy

Oh yes...and I'm not quite sure what advantages it brings to use a RPI with the Duet 3. AFAIK it also runs stand alone.

@MartinNYHC Duet 2 continues to be the mainstream product and IMO will be more than adequate for your needs. But compare the features of both. I do have Duet 3 but that's because my Machine is a CoreXYUVAB with 6 extruders so needs to run 13 stepper motors. If I was building a "standard" CoreXY, I would definitely choose Duet 2. I also have an RPi but as yet, I haven't seen any compelling reason to connect it so I run "stand alone".

Future options for plugins/customization etc mainly. However as of RRF3.2 you can use the rPi with existing Duet 2 Ethernet/WiFi. The Ethernet is the easier option to convert, given some more time to test I think WiFi will be even easier if you can print a part and glue in some pogo pins (but still on the drawing pad that idea)
You'll find two threads this week showing it working with the current code from git, give a month or two to mature and the biggest difference will be the CAN bus and stepper driver current for most people the Duet 2 will suffice for quite some time still.
(Interesting to note that seem to be working on another version of the Duet 3 which might be a middle ground, but details are scarse and no timeline

I'm happy to hear that, as that's the way I'll be going (Duet 2) in my upcoming corexy build.

@MartinNYHC I'm in the midst of a BLV cube build / remix and ended up deciding to swap out the Duet 2 Wifi clone that came with the kit I bought for a Duet 3. My decision mostly came down to wanting a third independently-controlled Z axis for true bed leveling, and wanting to support the Duet with purchase of genuine hardware (and of course appreciating the corresponding warranty :D). Additional positives for me were the additional fan PWM fan channels and support for four-pin fans, and stepper drivers that support StealthChop. I may ultimately switch over to using the CAN bus so I can have some easily-swapped toolheads for specialty use / trying out new hardware. Otherwise it's way overkill for my build.
Also, in case you were considering the kit from AliExpress, I'd recommend against it I think. The quality of the electrical components they supply is garbage, the heated bed is really bad, the extruder is inferior to other BMG clones, and although the extrusions are very nicely cut and anodized, the connection system using the little angle brackets isn't easy to square up. I'm actually in the middle of disassembly to tap the extrusions to use blind joints.
But this was my first build, so counting it as a solid learning experience.

@deckingman: I'm currently waiting for an offer to purchase the kit without the board (also want to buy a genuine one ), extruder, hotend and psu. The last few days i tried to collect all the kit parts from local shops and it turned out to be not that easy. Therefore I deciced to ask for a kit without the parts I don't want respectively still have.
If you're saying that the heated bed is also garbage I'm wondering why the designer of the kit recommends the kit from AliExpress.
Mhhh....now I'm a litle bit confused

i keep forgetting the 2660 doesn't do that; wonder how far off they are with a rewamped Duet2 with 2209 - could be worth the wait if StealthChop is important and the current Maestro isn't an option.

What? I made no mention of heated beds, kits or anything else. You asked for advice on whether to use Duet 2 or Duet 3 and I gave my opinion on that and nothing else.

@deckingman I think it was a case of mistaken identity with my reply.
@MartinNYHC Yeah, not sure myself either. I mean the bed can work if you have mesh compensation, but I found that it moves a ton as it heats. Also the solder connection is on the top instead of the bottom, which means it's possible to short the contacts with the spring steel if you're not careful. And the IR sensor clone was junk, probably has old firmware that causes a false double trigger. (if I can find a friend with an AVR flasher I may try updating the clone myself, but a new flasher costs almost as much as a new IR sensor...) I ended up buying a new genuine one from PrintedSolid. I had problems with backlash in the lead screws, too. And the MeanWell power supply they send you has a very loud fan.
I ended up going with a tooling plate aluminum bed from 713maker.com, a silicone AC bed heater controlled by a relay, and UHP-350R-24 fanless power supply. I got 2mm pitch lead screws with Delrin nuts from Zyltech.com, and ordered some new extrusions from tnutz.com. I've got an order from Triangle Labs for a higher-quality BMG clone. If you're in the US, I believe you could put together a pretty decent BOM for around the same price as the BluRolls kit but with much higher quality. Would be happy to work together with you if you're interested.

I know that the Meanwell PSUs always have quite loud fans. I have a Meanwell UHP-1000-48 "lying around". It is fanless and the output voltage is adjustable. Perfect for the new printer
I think I'll take the risk with the heated bed. Let's see what price they offer me without the unwanted parts.

Regarding the Duet board I'm still quite unsure which to choose. I have also a RPI4 which is no longer needed. If I wouldgo with the Duet 3 and the RPI maybe I'm more "save" for the future.
And yes, the additional PWM fan channels are not uninteresting.

the option would be a duet2+duex ... in that case I'd probably lean towards duet3.
but for the futureproofing by having the pi option i'd still opt for the duet2 as that is already an option to use the pi.
(although I would most certainly just use a duet 2 + external mosfets on the duex headers if I just needed a fan or two extra for the cost of the duet3 or duex - but DIY isn't for everyone, i get that)

would you go this route if the hemera was available? was looking at this the same clone the other day after having waited 6+ months and still no word from the local reseller on the hemera

@bearer It remains to be seen whether my BMG clone, which I ordered in April, will get here prior to Hemeras being available again... I like my other (genuine) BMG quite a bit and have some value on ability to swap parts / experiment with other heat breaks and such. So in this specific case probably yes. But been thinking of building an IDEX at some point and would probably go Hemera there, it's a pretty solid value...

Just to make sure that I understand the documentation: when using a Duet 3 with RPI the DWC is running on the RPI? This means, that I can use any Touchscreen supported by the RPI?

@MartinNYHC correct; I quite like the Raspberry Pi official screen due to its flat flex cable that I found easier to hide than a normal hdmi one, but its not the biggest or highest resolution screen available.
side note; you could use any touch screen on any pi to access DWC over the network regardless of where DWC was running. but it is correct that it runs on the Pi and as such will work even without networking.

I have a BLV and after my Duet2 died am in the process of changing to a 3.
My suggestion is if you're not going to do a tool changer or triple-z axis then go with the 2 as the documentation is a bit easier to understand and you don't need the more powerful steppers. The other advantages are is you can get the SD card on the panelDue (and weirdly for me worked better with a long cable than the 4 pin connection). The Pi currently doesn't really give you much advantage over DWC but just boots slower. If you are considering a tool changer or multiple extruder it still works just as well provided you don't go direct drive for your heads.
On the other hand the 3 makes connecting a direct drive tool changer much easier to wire and swap out, the Pi can use high quality screens and is a touch faster with uploads once booted.
