In the first picture, the wood-grain waviness is often due to the extruder gears. I don't know of any cure for it except maybe to use an extruder with a very high gear reduction, and even that might not solve the problem.
If the print wall is thin, as the print gets taller it will distort under its own weight and create the sort of waviness in the second picture. In the past I tried printing tall vases with a 0.5 mm wall and they got very bad as they got taller. Now I routinely print 600 mm tall vases with 1.2mm wall thickness (1 mm nozzle) without such problems.
