Retraction Speed: Why always so little?
-
Almost every 3D printer setup guide caps retraction speed at 60, many say one should start off at 20.
Why so?
Does it not make sense to put it as high as possible?
When you retract, you want the printer to stop oozing filament as fast as possible.
Also, retraction happens against almost no resistance, so the extruder motor can handle the torque easily.Or is there something I am missing out on?

@tryptamine If you retract too fast, instead of pulling the molten filament back, it tends to stretch it and it might even break the bead. Every hot end / filament combination is different so the only way to find out is to print a retraction test part. Start slow(ish) until you find the right amount (distance), then increase the retraction speed and if necessary revise the distance. G10 firmware retraction is a good way to vary the parameters as the print progresses. You'll find there is an optimum and it won't be the fastest speed.
