Compute Module 4 and Duet 3
-
So I’m seriously considering integrating a Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4) into an adapter board that integrates with the Duet 3. I’m using the adapter board regardless, so it might make a lot of sense to include the compute module on it.
Anyone have experience using a compute module before? I swear I saw a post here before on it but I can’t find it. I think the only connection I’d need is the Ethernet connection from the compute module and the lines running to the Duet 3. I could use a jumper still and normal pi, so I’m trading pros and cons.
Anyone have any thoughts? Main points I can come up with are slight cost reduction from the compute module, integrated memory, and direct soldered connection increasing reliability and eliminating the cable.
For the record, I’m investigating having multiple Pi computers over a single network with PoE to reduce wiring. So displays and input devices will be on another pi. Works well with the web server approach.

@tlas Use the WIFI version and the ethernet won't be needed. With the ones with sdram, you would only need power and gpio to the duet. If you want to write to the sdram, you'll need a usb slave port and the pins to enable writing to it or the IO board to put the OS on it. I wish I could design one.

Thanks Stephen!Unfortunately my card is in a giant metal box…. WiFi isn’t too great of an option, but it’s definitely worth $5 to add WiFi just in case.
I bought a clone of the IO board and a Clone of the CM4 (only ones I could find with the supply shortages!). The supply issues have made me think it’d be a good option to put both a full Pi4 mount and the interface for the CM4. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

@tlas IIRC the Wifi version has a separate antenna so a metal box shouldn't be an issue https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/raspberry-pi-compute-module-4-antenna-kit

I think I should have clarified more. :). The pi is about 2 feet deep into a giant 6ft x 4 ft x 6 ft metal box…The other option is to use a USB extension cable to a bulkhead and a USB WiFi adapter. I’m leaning toward an Ethernet port and Ethernet Switch. I tend to like Ethernet cables a lot more after being burned by the Duet 2 WiFi so many times (although I admit I’ve never had any problems with the Pi).

@tlas There are extensions available for the antenna. I use one on my Duet 3 Mini to put it on top of the printer.

That, I did not know. Thanks for the heads-up.
