Smart Effector usable w/o carriage set-up?
-
Rebuilding a Rostock MaxV3 into a Duet2 WiFi machine with a DirectDrive extruder mounted at the hot end.
Need a calibration nozzle contact sensor/solution.
Recently discovered the Duet Smart Effector v1.3 (StrainEffector) pcb. Looks promising!Is the Smart Effector usable for Z touch-offs/calibration moves at the nozzle without the carriage inputs?
I see that the Duet Smart Effector involves the triangulation component with pcbs at the carriage glides but I don't think my carriages can accommodate those boards.
Not sure if the Duet Smart Effector is a waste of pcb if not employing the control arm/carriage loops?
Feedback?

Absolutely.
The Smart Effector is designed to be used on a delta with 55mm arm spacing and magball arms. If you decide to use magball arms, and are okay with 55mm spacing, you can create your own carriages, as long as they also have 55mm arm spacing.
As well, if you need a different spacing, you can create some kind of adapter for supporting the smart effector that has a different arm spacing, as long as the spacing on the effector adapter matches your carriages. (I'm currently using a smart effector adapted to 84mm arm spacing.)
However, being that you mentioned the Rostock, I'd suggest taking a look at this product: https://713maker.com/en/rostock/duet-smart-effector-adaptor
My understanding is that the above linked adapter can be used to match a Smart Effector to most SeemeCNC delta printers.
I don't know if it's the proper size for your Rostock MaxV3, but I have found that company to be very responsive to questions made from their "contact us" page, and I'm certain that they'd be happy to help you.

@garyd9
That's the answer I was looking for!
I am looking at the 713maker mounts and they will fit my rig perfectly.
Now I'm off to get that Smart Effector!

@nurbie
I have the Smart Effector on my RMax v2 with the molded cheapskates. The carriage adapters that come with the SE will fit perfectly on the molded cheapskates where the ball joints mount. 713Maker has some really nice stuff, but learn from my mistake and don't get the SE to ballcup arm adapter ($40). The problem with the 713Maker adapter is that it increases the distance of the arm articulation points between axis (not between the two arms of each axis, but between each axis) which makes the effector VERY susceptible to tilting. This wiki page describes it all very well.
Just order a set of 304mm (or larger) magball arms to go with the smart effector and you'll appreciate the upgrade from stock.Let me know if you have any questions
