Continuous strand extrusion
-
Had an idea that's been bugging me for a few weeks about whether it would be possible with the duet WiFi. Can custom commands be issued on retraction so for example to lift nozzle slightly and cut the filament. If so has anyone done this? From having a Google I can see there's the markforged but that's extortionate!
I was also tempted to make the filament at the same time by pulling UD Carbon strand through a bath of melted ABS (or other suitable plastic) and then shaping through a nozzle. I don't think auger type filament makers would work as getting the continuous strand in will be an issue. This can of course be done in a separate operation but was wondering if anyone has tried this?
I'm prepared to use a huge nozzle for the carbon as know the filament being layed needs to have the same cross section as the filament to avoid stretching or compressing the continuous strands. Plus this'll be on a dual extruder machine so finer non carbon layers will surround it on the final part

Can you be a bit more specific in what it is you want from the Duet? (all that stuff about making filament is a bit irrelevant).
Presumably, you wouldn't want to lift the nozzle and cut the filament every time you retract. So maybe what you are looking for is to be able to call a macro that will do what you want "as and when", and that is indeed possible.
Or are you looking for the mechanical solutions as to how to cut filament?

I do recall a somewhat recent thread with a similar request for cutting, maybe go searching and see what happened there
hmm, seems its been quiet over there > https://forum.duet3d.com/topic/10767/triggering-a-macro-by-g-command
