Auto-Lowering Print Bed Due to Print Head Resistance

Dear all,
Today while printing, I noticed that when the print head encounters a certain amount of resistance (such as uneven surfaces on the part), the print bed automatically moves down by approximately one layer's distance. Is this some kind of collision avoidance feature in the settings? Can it be turned off? Or is it more likely a mechanical issue with the printer?(seems not)

@Adamrobot there's not a collision avoidance setting or anything so sounds mechanical
