TL;DR, a faster BL Touch sensor with a linear sensor.
BL Touch is a very effective Z sensor, compact, simple, and measures the actual surface. It's main challenge is that it's slow, mainly because it's has a binary switch that require head Z movement for each point.
Imagine that BLT would have a linear sensor that measure the distance the pin moved until heating the surface. In this case, the head would move in X/Y only and the BLT will tap and measure the surface.
Apparently this technique is already used in atomic force microscopes and this guy build a larger scale proof of concept.
