Duet 2 Wifi USB PORT smoke
-
Oh, thats a bit unusual, its an older board as well - which revision is it? Should say something Rev 1.2 somewhere on the silkscreen just to the right of whats shown on the picture.
Anyways, that is diode D13 with a bulge on it. SS14M or similar.
Again if the board still works with Vin then you're OK and only need to replace that diode to power the board from USB.
However, odds are there is a fault in your wiring somewhere.

My board is V1.04 I purchased it back in 2018. In the picture the board is powered by USB nothing is connected otherwise. That smoke doesn't happen with 24V (red and black wiring) but when that is connected I don't see the blue led.
I have the solder machine that I was using for my Arduino projects but It looks like I need more specialized tools for that.
-
Looks like a cloned board?
If so, its easier to solder because they're usually not extra heavy copper (just 1oz instead of 2oz) - should be possible to just add more solder to each side of the diode and try to get both sides melted at the same time and pick up the part with tweezers. Clean pads with solder wick then solder in a new diode one pad at the time with a regular iron.
But you'll want to find out where you have a wiring error of the computer USB port is damaged.

@bearer I'm not sure about the board. I have multiple computers in the office so the same result with them. Where can I buy that replacement diode?
-
check the back. thats a good indication if its a cloned board.

mouser, digikey, farnel, rs, arrow or any of the masjor players will have it, or you can look at ebay or amazon etc as well.
top silkscreen says Bas .. ed on Duet2Wifi so pretty sure its a colone, but doesn't really matter other than being easier to repair (and break for that matter)

I was using my Duet Wifi 2 from 2018-2019. About a year ago, the board suddenly stopped, and after it didn't work again. It was showing VIN light when connected to 24v power. When I connect it to a USB to a computer, I can see also the blue light and the computer can detect it but smokes are coming from the USB port when it is connected to USB. Is it possible to repair this or should I get a new one? I am using the spare Duet I have with the machine.
Are you using a laptop or a desktop?
When using a laptop, do not connect the power supply as you can cause a usb ground loop. -
It's perfectly-safe(tm) to use both desktops and laptops when everything is in working order. Sure a laptop running off batteries can alleviate pottenial ground loop issues but ensuring everything is at the same ground potential is the best bet.
However this issue might not be a clear cut ground loop, it tends to fry the ground pin/trace on the usb port - but it could be the diode on a cloned board is an even weaker link
-
@whosrdaddy No desktop.
-
you could:
- disable power via USB by taping off the power connection in your USB cable
- power the board via the optional external 5V input (see https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Hardware_Overview for the wiring diagram).
Also make sure to check the back of the board for any bad solder spots, and as others said before, triple check your wiring.
