@tkamsker I hope it solves your problem! I've updated my 7i panel several times now and it's a painless process. I just followed the normal sequence of "erase", "reset", "run bossac".
The other thing is the current limit which dc42 mentioned. I use a USB3 port to update the panel's firmware as the USB3 standard specifies that a minimum of 900mA must be available for a device. That's more than enough to drive even the big 7 inch panel.

unfortunately it didn't work i have a macbook pro and use that port to power an raspberry with octopi
so i did take that cable from octopi to printer which should do serial ;).
But no luck not on windows and osx ,..
any hints ? -
On Linux it is very fiddly to get the bossa device to reply to serial because of the way it wants the serial connection set up, maybe the same issue applies to macOS. On Windows it should work if you have the right drivers installed.
What is the version of bossa you are using? Make sure it is the latest one.

i now tried Windows 10 on the dual boot of the macbook pro (it is an USB3 ) and on an Windows 7 machine also an notebook the backlit lights but no serial shows off.
Si in my experience (Mesa cards , etc ) there is normally a way to connect an Serial/usb to TTL converter an i can see th pins on the board question is how do i get the code on the board ?
if anyone has some hint then i can overcome the USB issue and i have now the E3D Dual tool changer machine ready only the 7i is waiting ,..
and i have the issue that wile printing the Webserver is not responding so i hope that i can see on the panel how the machine is behaving ,.. right ? -

I'm using Linux and as long as your user is a member of the correct groups so that you have access to the serial device, there is no setup to do.

When I update my panel, I remove the four pin connector that goes to the printer before attempting to update it.

hi yes of course the panel is in an mounting box to ensure no metal parts can touch the pcb on my desk printer another desk ,.. so it is just my pc the cable and the panel ,..

@grizewald true for serial devices in general, but I simply couldn't get bossac on linux to connect to my panel due (I am not a newcomer to linux either). Eventually I resorted to using a Windows machine of a friend (using the same cable). Maybe it was a freak occurrence.

so back to my problem ,..
i have OSX (preferred) ,linux and Windows 7 m, Windows 10 at hand. Windows 7 even on an separate Notebook dedicated for CAM. So my experience with FPGA, VFD drivers tells me that here is normally an Programming board. i can see that pins of the Panel PCB. From what I can see on the 7i PCB, the data lines from the USB connector go straight to the microprocessor. So the USB-Serial function is performed on the microprocessor itself. There is no intermediate USB-Serial converter to bypass.
I'm out of ideas here.
