@fcwilt I have resolved the issue. Thanks for your help. Yes, it does mean that those three options are about all there is. In fact, I started at the switch and checked continuity at all points where a break could occur all the way back to the JST connector on the board. They all passed. So, I took the pins out of the JST connector and checked those, they were fine. When I put it back together and connected it to the board, it started working. It appears the problem was the pins in the connector were not making a connection (which makes no sense but that is what is seems to have been).

@lei261 you are vary lucky not to have damaged anything. Typically, excess voltage applied to the 5V rail damages the 3.3V regulator and quite often the microcontroller and network module too. In your case the A4988 chip appears to have shorted out the 5V rail before more damage was done.

BTW Duet 3 boards (except for the Tool Board) are protected against this type of short, however other devices connected to 5V such as PanelDue are not protected and would still be likely to suffer damage.

@rmilyard the Pi has very specific power requirements. In particular, the 3.3V regulator on it has quite a high dropout voltage, so it really needs a 5.2V power supply, not 5V. Added to this, the ribbon cable connecting the Duet and the Pi is not really suited to carrying the amount of current that the Pi 4 demands, so there will be some voltage drop in it.

The 6HC board was originally designed to be able to power a Pi 3 with very little attached. The Pi 4 draws more current than the Pi 3, and if you add a HDMI display then you may exceed the 3A rating of the 5V external power capability of the MB6HC.

For these reasons, we recommend that you use a PSU specifically designed to power a RPi 4 and whatever accessories you power from it.

@stefvandermeer you should be able to tell by looking at the display from the side whether the backlight is working. You could also use a multimeter to see if there is any output from the backlight inverter. The part number for the inverter chip is at https://docs.duet3d.com/en/User_manual/Troubleshooting/Parts#paneldue-tft-panel-backlight-inverter-ic.
